A Mongolian fishing trip is remote, wild and unforgettable. A little planning makes it smooth too. Here is what our team tells every guest before they travel.
1. Book early
- Each trip takes no more than 8 anglers (6 on Rafting), so popular weeks fill fast.
- Press Book now on any trip page to see live availability for every arrival date.
- A 50% deposit secures your place; the balance is due at least 120 days before departure.
2. Choose your route to camp
- Mörön route (included): a domestic flight from Ulaanbaatar to Mörön (about 1 hour), then an SUV transfer of about 8 hours.
- Charter flight: straight from Ulaanbaatar to camp in about 3 hours. Ask us for a quote.
- Arriving in Ulaanbaatar a day early gives you a buffer for international flight delays.
3. Bring the right rods and lines
- A 9–10 wt rod for taimen and a 5–6 wt rod for lenok and grayling. Prefer spinning? Bring a spinning rod and reel, with lures on single barbless hooks.
- Floating and full sinking lines.
- Flies are not included. Stock up at Buddy Shop, our own tackle shop.
- See the full What to Bring list.
4. Dress for four seasons
- Evenings are cool and the weather changes fast, with rain or even snow possible. September days are often 15–20°C (60–70°F).
- Pack thermal layers, a warm jacket and full rain gear, plus full chest waders and wading boots.
5. Sort your documents and insurance
- Travel and medical insurance are required, including emergency evacuation cover. Our camps are remote.
- We ask for a scanned copy of your passport when you book. Check visa rules for your nationality, and ask us if you need help.
6. Fish the catch-and-release way
- All fishing is catch-and-release, with single barbless hooks.
- Keep fish in the water as much as possible, and follow your guide's lead for handling and photos.
- Read more about how we protect the river wolf.
7. Small things that help
- Bring US dollars in cash for tips and meals in Ulaanbaatar.
- Starlink internet is available on all our trips, and power banks are provided on Headwater and Rafting trips.
- Pack in a soft duffel bag rather than a hard suitcase.
